Another season of wrestling has begun for Cody Middle School. Taylor Baggs (wrestler for eight years) is really excited for wrestling to start because a lot of new kids have joined and he hopes to have a higher chance of winning.  His favorite thing about wrestling is going to different places and wrestling new people. Taylor’s hard work paid off last year as he was conference champ and hopes for a repeat. Coach Grenz is also thrilled for wrestling to start because he hopes the team will defend their conference title. Coach Grenz’s favorite part of wrestling is each wrestler participates and sees their weekly improvements after each meet. He has always enjoyed the sport and loves the individual battles that every match presents.

Mr. Duncan will be returning as a coach this year and the middle school wrestlers will get the opportunity to work with Mr. Wood, the high school varsity wrestling coach, as a new addition to the coaching line up.   Be sure to cheer them on at the only home meet on Thursday, November 29th at 4pm at the Cody High School .

This year’s roster includes:

Royce Adams, Grayson Beaudrie, Dylan Campbell, Wyatt Carlson, Kade Fitzgerald, Jace Grant, Wyatt McKnight, Kale Mickelson, Jed Oilar, Alex Turner, Ghavin Vance, Jackson Wood, Taylor Baggs, Zac Barton, Jayden Bounty, Dillon Bullock, Barrett George, Micah Grant, Trenton Hubbs, Parker Laing, Shayne Maxwell, Kash Merritt, Ty Peterson, Teagan Robson, Ben Seibert, Henry Switzer, Trevon Anderson, Logan Barton, Elijah Cook, Simon Danforth, Trey Smith, Aaron Trotter, Myles Hensley, Patrick Connors.

Brief History of Wrestling

Wrestling is known to be the oldest sport on earth. There were cave drawings found in ancient France dating back to 15,000 BCE of wrestling. It was one of the original sports in the ancient Olympics. Ancient Greeks used it as a way to train soldiers in hand to hand combat.  Early Egyptian and Babylonian reliefs show moves that are still used today. There are about 245,564 thousand youth that wrestle each year.
