Feliz Fiesta

One of the most celebrated holidays in all Spanish-speaking countries is Cinco de Mayo. This holiday is celebrated on May 5th every year. There are many ways to celebrate this Holiday, including parties, parades, Mexican folk dancing and traditional foods like tacos and mole poblano, and mariachi music.

Mrs. Johnson, the Spanish teacher here at CMS is from Chile. She said that her favorite part about celebrating Cinco De Mayo is the history behind the holiday, the bright colors, and the food. She really doesn’t celebrate this holiday where she’s from, but in Mexico, people think that Cinco de Mayo is the independence day. The truth is that Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of the Mexican victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862. She also believes in what her Mexican friends have told her about how the United States celebrates Cinco De Mayo more than Mexico does, but it depends on where you are in Mexico. When Mrs. Johnston first came to Cody, she used to volunteer for the library and read to young children Spanish books about this holiday. She also loves Mexican food!

Cinco de Mayo is a great holiday to party and eat lots of Mexican food! This year on May 5, 2022, remember to celebrate the Mexican’s victory over the French forces at the Battle of Puebla.
