The War Below is about a Jew named Luka during World War II. At the beginning of the book, Luka escapes from a prison camp, leaving behind his only friend. The book focuses on the challenges that he faces the people he meets and the underground. As he makes his way back home he finds himself in the middle of a war zone. Luka is forced to stop his journey for a while but finds that his medical skills were very helpful to the Ukranian Red Cross. He cannot stay for long though as soon as the war zone shifts he’s back on the move.

I choose The War Below because I have read other books by Marsha Skrypuch. This book is good for anyone wondering what it would have been like to be a Jew in Europe during World War II. I liked the book because it took readers into Lukas’s life to experience what he did and feel the weight of the decisions he made. I would have made the aftermath for the characters involved with the story more clear.   I give this book the following rating:  ⚫⚫⚫⚫ ⭘
