It’s official! It’s wrestling season. 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students are preparing for the grueling, but fun season of practice and tournaments. Practice started on October 15, and the first tournament will be October 26, in Powell. The team consists of 33 middle schoolers grades 6th, 7th, and 8th. The wrestlers will work on common and simple takedowns and pinning combos he first week of practice. The second week of practice they will move into the more painful and effective pinning combos and takedowns. Then as the year progresses they will work on more and more challenging and effective moves such as skin series, fireman carry, and different types of half nelsons.

The coaches this year are Travis Duncan, Rodney Miears, Trev Wood, and Talon Yates. This year for the second year in a row the wrestlers get to work with the varsity wrestling coach, Trev Wood. This opportunity is great for beginner wrestlers who will continue to wrestle through high school. Be sure to support them here at home on December 3rd, at 4:00.

A quick history about the sport, is that it dates back 15,000 years to cave drawings. The drawings show the Babylonians, and the Egyptians using the same moves wrestlers use today. The sport is one of the oldest forms of combat for these ancient civilizations. The mention of wrestling goes as far back as the Old Testament.
