The Nutcracker is a ballet about a young girl named Clara who attends a party on Christmas Eve. For a present, she receives a nutcracker, later that night she falls into a deep sleep with the Nutcracker in her arms. She wakes up to a battle between life-size toy soldiers and rats. Then she enters a realm where she meets Mother Ginger, Arabian Coffee, Marzipan Candy, the Dew Drop Fairy, Flowers, The Icicle princess, Chinese and Dragon, Clowns, Spanish, and the Sugar Plum Fairy.
Every year, Rocky Mountain Dance Theater (RMDT) performs the Nutcracker ballet for the community, it is a Cody tradition. Elizabeth Fernandez is the one behind it all. RMDT had their first Nutcracker in 1998 and had only 76 people dancing in the ballet. This year will be the 20th Nutcracker that Cody, Wyoming will experience. Her inspiration for starting the Nutcrackers was to give her dancers to have an opportunity to participate in a full-length ballet and for the community to experience a ballet. She also wanted to start a tradition for the dancers and community to look forward to every year.
Keira Jackson, a CMS student, has been in The Nutcracker for three years. She started because one year she went to watch the Ballet and really wanted to be a part of it. Keira thought that the professional dancers that the dance studio flies in were flawless. Olivia Satterthwaite has been doing The Nutcracker for four years. She started because she saw one of her classmates doing it and wanted to do it as well. She likes how it is an after-school activity, she also likes how the dance studio puts it on for the community.
